rai's book

Posted 18 years, 9 months ago

My friend Rai was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago. He was a designer that I worked with at my previous job. A bunch of his designer friends got together and made a book for him, with each designer working with the idea of “hope” as their subject.

We presented him with the book tonight. It had 21 pages, with handmade endpapers and bound in leather. This is the page I made for Rai.

fantastic

I saw this comic book cover for DC’s SOLO, which features the character Deadman drawn in a very non-comic bookish style by illustrator Teddy Kristiansen. I decided to draw superheroes myself in my style just to see how it would turn out. After toying with the virtually unknown Guardians of the Galaxy, I opted for a more well-known superhero team.

What I found is that I tend to adapt my style to match the tone of the piece—which is to say, I’ve ended up with a very colorful, pop-arty version of the 1963 fantastic four.
