Horatio Pineapple is based on Captain Horatio Hornblower from the naval novels of C. S. Forester. Georgia O’Peach is based on painter Georgia O’Keeffe. Carl Gustave Fudge is based on Jung. Che Guevera as the inspiration for Cherry Gueverry was too good a pun to pass up. I’m sure he’d never make it to broadcast, but he serves me well, here. Tangerine Otter is Josephine Baker. I thought of naming her Tangerine Baker, but children wouldn’t get the reference (which is fine—there are many things I was exposed to when I was a kid that I didn’t learn until later, i.e “I will hug him and squeeze him and name him George”, fake history lessons from Sherman and Mr. Peabody, and even more obscure mysteries such as the inspiration for the Kerwood Derby). Finally, Willy Wondermelon was based very loosely on Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.
