the great santa debate

In the Nov/Dec issue of Today’s Christian is an illustration for the article The Great Santa Debate. It discusses both pros and cons of whether or not you should tell your children about Santa.

The article was set up as two opposing viewpoints with text on either end of the spread, so the illustration was bisected by the gutter (notice the gap between Mary and Jesus). The title was to be set at the top of the left page (notice the gap between “Santa” and “Debate”). I decided to create this illustration in three seperate parts: background, title, and creche. This let the art director move the details precisely where he needed them.

I’ve recombined and centered the elements to make a more pleasing composition for the purposes of viewing it here.
